Nearly a year after their previous deal expired, members of the Screen Actors Guild voted 78 percent in favor of approving a new two-year contract, effective June 10 at 12:01 a.m., covering film, TV, digital and new media projects.
Approximately 35.3 percent of SAG's 110,000 members mailed in a ballot.
SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers hammered out a tentative deal in April, as SAG's leadership—which believed it was getting screwed over financially in multiple ways—finally took a cue from its increasingly disgruntled membership and opted to put the terms to a vote.
"This is a great decision for SAG and I'm so appreciative of everything the new leadership is doing to put the Guild back on track," Monk star Tony Shalhoub said in approval. "They've obviously got the right ideas for making SAG stronger."
As when the Writers Guild of America went to battle with the AMPTP, SAG's major sticking point was new-media residuals and protection for actors as their projects go digital.
"The membership has spoken and has decided to work under the terms of this contract that many of us, who have been involved in these negotiations from the beginning, believe to be devastatingly unsatisfactory," SAG president Alan Rosenberg said in a statement.
"Tomorrow morning I will be contacting the elected leadership of the other talent unions with the hope of beginning a series of pre-negotiation summit meetings in preparation for 2011. I call upon all SAG members to begin to ready themselves for the battle ahead."
Oh, boy.
The new contract contains $105 million in wage increases for union members, though, per studio estimates, actors have also lost out on about $80 million in raises by working under the terms of the old deal—which expired June 30, 2008.

The Universal Cheerleaders Association brings its 2009 West Coast Championship competition to the Shrine Auditorium. Dance teams, recreational/youth cheerleader teams, and all-star cheer teams will compete for prizes over the course of two days, with award ceremonies taking place throughout the competition.

Shriners Closing Hospitals?
Hello ShowBiz Nobles: Some of you may have read the Texas newspapers or have heard rumers that Shriners Hospitals for children are closing!
The offical word from Ralph Semb, President & Chief Executive Officer is that the Boards of Directors and Trustees voted to SUSPEND additional renovation and reconstruction activity at the Galveston Hospital , pending further evaluation and improvement in our financial situation. this action could avoid as much as $30 milion in annualized operation expense. More than $3.5 million has already been invested in addressing the damage from Hurricane Ike at the Galveston Shriners Hospital for Children.
The others stories that have come to light is that the constriction of the St. Louis and Los Angeles Shriners Hospitals for Children have been put on hold because of finical reasons.
I know that this is the Award season and many of you have a very full calendar, but it is also a time when you see a lot of friends that can help us raise money for our hospitals.
I and not asking you to collect from your friends but to get Ideas for fund raisers.
I know many of you have given your help in the past for Shriners, Shriners Hospitals for Children and other worthy programs.
So have many nonShriners, J. Timberlake concert raised a million dollars last Oct. But we need 30 times that just to cover the operation expanse at Galveston.
Now is the time for the Nobles of the ShowBiz community to pull together and and show the world we are proud of what the Shriners Hospital for children do.

Shriners Hospital team to visit Guam

A medical team from the Shriners Hospital for Children in Hawaii will provide free consultative services for children with special health care needs who are age 18 or younger, and who have an orthopedic, arthritic or plastic surgical condition such as deformities, disease and injuries involving the bones, joints and muscles, “healed burns,” including loss of any part of the child's body.
The clinic will be held from Jan. 15 to 16 and Jan 20 to 23 at the Department of Public Health and Social Services clinic in Mangilao. For an appointment, or more information, call Arlean Kloppenburg at 735-7117 or e-mail: arlean.kloppenburg@dphss.guam.gov.
